SUSTAINABILITY
Naturamel’s sustainability in cheesemaking encompasses a range of practices aimed at reducing environmental impact, promoting animal welfare, supporting local communities, and ensuring the long-term viability of artisanal cheesemaking operations.
ANIMAL WELFARE
The most of our cooperating dairy farmers and cheesemakers have chosen for pasture-based or organic dairy farming practices that prioritize animal welfare and minimize environmental impact.
LOCALLY SOURCED MILK
Cheesemakers and farmers give priority in sourcing milk from (own) local farms to reduce transportation emissions and support local agriculture. By sourcing milk locally, cheesemakers and farmers feel more connected and hope to contribute to the economic vitality of rural communities.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
An important goal is to implement energy-efficient working methods to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This is realized by investing in energy-efficient equipment, optimizing production processes, and utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power.
WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING
Naturamel’s cheesemakers and farmers focus on implementing strategies to minimize waste generation and maximize recycling and reuse of materials. This involves recycling water used in production, composting organic waste, and finding innovative uses for by-products such as whey.
PACKAGING & TRANSPORTATION
Sustainable cheesemaking involves considering the environmental impact of packaging materials and transportation methods.
Naturamel's cooperating packagers try as much as they can to go for eco-friendly packaging options, such as reducing packaging weight and using ‘mono’ materials, which are more recyclable (the aim is to use biodegradable materials in the nearest future). This all shall contribute to minimize packaging waste wherever possible. Additionally, optimizing transportation routes and using fuel-efficient and electric vehicles will help reduce carbon emissions associated with distribution.
BIODIVERSITY AND LAND STEWARDSHIP
Naturamel's cooperating farmers play as much as they can a role in promoting biodiversity and responsible land stewardship. This include preserving natural habitats, implementing regenerative agricultural practices, and supporting biodiversity-friendly farming methods that enhance soil health and ecosystem resilience.
NATURAMEL’S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Sustainable cheesemaking involves engaging with local communities and stakeholders to build relationships, foster transparency, and support shared values.
By embracing sustainable practices, Naturamel's cooperating cheesemakers and farmers can not only reduce their environmental footprint but also try to contribute to the overall health and resilience of agricultural ecosystems, support rural economies, and produce high-quality artisanal cheeses that reflect a commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
